Mass Unemployment in India due to Google Penguin Update & Google Panda 3.6

Saturday, May 5, 2012

One US Digital Marketing agency stated:

“90% of our business was outsourced to India, we assumed they had the knowledge to keep Google happy but we were wrong”

One Indian ‘SEO Expert’, Steve Patel,  used to work 15 hour per day ‘spinning’ content and uploading it to a large network of sites for US/UK clients. His youngest son, Ashwad (6yrs), had also been taught how to link build.  ”Ashwad was getting very good on programmes like Xrummer, but now his future is in jeopardy”

Matt Cutts (head of Google webspam team) is expected to address the angry crowds tomorrow via video link from Google HQ.  He is expected to offer them support and ask them to watch some of his Webmaster Tools videos on how to link build the Google way.

“If you see a funny picture post it on your blog…you can get a lot of links very quickly”

Today internet workers protested outside Google Mumbai. Google’s recent algorithm change (called Penguin) has created widespread unemployment in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.  The Penguin update effected low quality SEO/link building services, much of  which was being outsourced by the US.   It is estimated that 80% of the worlds link building was carried out in India, many of the top SEO firms in the UK and Europe outsourcing work here.   They are now having to change the way they work and find new solutions, many not having the knowledge themselves.

Google Penguin Creates Mass Unemployment in India

Google Penguin Creates Mass Unemployment in India

Google’s new privacy policy has just come into effect, and caused quite a bit of fuss in the process. Online privacy has become a hot topic lately, so it was inevitable that any changes Google made to how it treats user data would come under the microscope.
If you look closely enough, you’ll see that Google’s new policy is actually very unGoogle.
What’s the new policy?
On the face of it, the policy is innocuous enough. Google says they are merely amalgamating their 60 or so individual privacy policies (one for each product) into one simplified, streamlined policy that covers all of their properties: from the search engine to YouTube via Gmail and AdWords.
However, this amalgamation also means that they can now trade data between these products in a way they’ve previously been unable to. Most controversially, they can now feed more data into the AdWords and AdSense packages that comprise 97% of Google’s revenue.
Why is it UnGoogle?
Although to a certain extent the trade off between data and free services has always been made clear, the new privacy policy is actually very opaque.
On the eve of the policy coming into effect, French regulators CNIL, on behalf of the EU, declared the policy to be “unlawful” as well as calling it unfair. The reason being that the policy doesn’t go into enough detail about what data the company will collect on its users, and how that will be shared amongst its various products.
And although users are given the option of opting out of data tracking (see below), this is arguably not made sufficiently clear, or instructions on how to do so given sufficient prominence.
The EU statement also pointed out that given the lack of information in the policy on what data will be collected and how, Google’s actual practices come into question. By not providing enough information, we are left to only guess at what goes on behind the scenes, which may involve further contravention of European data protection legislation.
Given that Google has managed to climb its way to official Web Overlord status without too many eyelids being batted thanks to a benign reputation, this shadiness over data protection and privacy is alarming. The company’s famed motto – “don’t be evil” is looking a little smudged these days; as is its reputation for being a champion of openness and transparency online – key to the brand’s success.
This blurring of privacy lines could be incredibly damaging for Google. Following the announcement of the new policy, and in the wake of numerous anti-trust suits brought against the company in both Europe and America over privacy issues related to Google’s data collection for its Street View service, Microsoft have launched a hard hitting ad campaign openly criticising Google on privacy issues in a bid to win users over to Bing.
What can you do about it?
You can opt out of data tracking. From your Google account, go to www.google.com/history and hit ‘pause’. If your only option is ‘turn on web history’ you’re already in the clear.
However, unlike the new privacy policy, this doesn’t cover you for every Google product. You may also wish to switch off viewing history in YouTube  and opt out of personalised adverts .
It should be noted that these are strictly opt out and only apparent to those determined to look for them.
What do you think? Is Google’s new policy UnGoogle? Is it time to switch to Bing?

US jobless rate hits 7-month high of 9.8%

After a major setback to the recovery and market expectations, the United States economy added just 39,000 jobs in November, and the unemployment rate rose to 9.8 percent, the Department of Labor reported Friday.

November’s numbers were far below the consensus forecast of close to 150,000 jobs added and an unemployment rate of 9.6 percent.

More than 15 million people remained out of work last month, and 6.3 million of them have been unemployed for six months or longer.

Private companies, which have been hiring since the beginning of the year, added 50,000 jobs in November. Most of those increases came from temporary help, where 40,000 jobs were added, and in health care, with an additional 19,000 jobs.

Concerns about joblessness and low inflation led to the US central bank’s decision last month to launch its now much-criticised second round of quantitative easing, known as QE2 in financial markets.

Fed officials are not the only ones worried about unemployment. The health of the labour market could determine whether President Barack Obama gets a second term in office in 2012.

US jobless rate hitEmployment last month was weak across the board, with government payrolls contracting as local authorities continue to struggle with budget problems.

Employment in the goods-producing sector fell 15,000, weighed down by manufacturing payrolls which fell 13,000 and construction shedding 5,000 jobs.

Employment in the private service-providing sector rose 65,000 last month, though retail hiring fell a surprising 28,100 despite expectations of a busy holiday season.

The work week was steady at 34.3 hours last month and average hourly earnings edged up one cent.

Barack Obama cheers US troops in Afganistan

President Barack Obama on Friday told cheering U.S. troops in Afghanistan they succeed in their important mission fighting against terrorism. But after he flew in secrecy for 13 hours to get here, foul weather kept him from nearby Kabul and a meeting to address frayed relations with Afghan President Hamid Karzai

Obama’s surprise visit to the war zone, his second as president, came 10 days before he is to address the nation about a new review of U.S. strategy to defeat the Taliban and strengthen the Afghan government so American troops can begin leaving next year.
[ad#ad-2]

The trip also came at a particularly awkward moment in already strained U.S. relations with Afghanistan because of new and embarrassing leaked cables alleging widespread fraud and underscoring deep American concerns about Karzai.

“President Obama was not here for a state visit but rather to visit American troops. The two leaders had already met in Lisbon two weeks ago and spoke in detail,” Waheed Omer, Karzai’s spokesperson said.
Barack Obama cheers US troops in AfganistanThere was no mention of that as the president spoke to more than 3,500 service members packed into a huge airplane hangar. After his remarks, he spent more than 10 minutes shaking hands, going around the hangar three times as they grabbed his hand and held cameras and cell phones high to take photos.

Obama stayed on this U.S. military base, the headquarters of the 101st Airborne Division, the entire time he was here, just under four hours. He huddled with U.S. Gen. David Petraeus, the top NATO commander in Afghanistan and U.S. Ambassador Karl Eikenberry. And he visited wounded soldiers at a base hospital, personally dispensing five Purple Hearts to wounded service members.

Actor and model Yana Gupta is going to be punished for forgetting to wear her panty. She has been in news for not wearing a panty for a kids charity show. Now, she has “wear panty reminder.” And Rizwan Ahmed, a self styled social activist from Lucknow, has filed a case against Yana, the photographer and Sushila Nirali, the event organiser. The sections are 292/ 293 and 294 of the IPC for obscenity.

When actress “without underwear” pics made the rounds on newspapers and internet, she laughed off the fashion faux pas rather than being embarrassed. She said that she would be now known as a ‘no-panty girl’ and that she should feature in underwear brand commercial.

Yana Gupta sued for her no Panty show stunt, Yana Gupta Panty Stunt“Also, one may forget to dress properly at a party or in one’s house, but certainly not at a public function meant for children. If it was a malfunction why didn’t Yana say so when the photographs appeared or why didn’t she lodge a complaint against the photographer?” Ahmed continued.

[ad#ad-1]While the state is working hard to contain HIV/ AIDS, it seems to have failed to immunize its medical programme against corruption and mismanagement of funds. At least three high–level inquiries are currently underway, in addition to several undercover operations to nab corrupt medical officers.

The Maharashtra State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) is probing charges of bribery against a medical officer at Thane civic hospital. The officer had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 from the patient to write a prescription for free anti–retroviral drugs.Corruption threatens to cripple state’s war on HIV

The role of the centre’s counsellor is also suspect in the episode. Another inquiry is on against a medical officer who allegedly demanded money to refer a patient for second line HIV/ AIDS treatment. There have also been verbal complaints about medical officers demanding bribes to conduct CD4 tests, which are free of cost.
